Chapter 8

Celia was burning through the phone calls, fast and furious.

She had to leave several messages, and, so far, had only connected with two of her test subjects. Neither reported anybody contacting them out of the blue. That was surprising, but then maybe not. They were very concerned about her disappearing out of the blue but appeared to accept her car accident, then coma excuse. By the time she’d finished, she was starving. She looked over at Ice and said, “Nothing.”

“Good, and at least now they’ll be on alert in case anybody does contact them.”

“Do you think that’s likely?”

“No, I really don’t. I think the kidnappers—or whoever hired them—already have enough loose threads right now to control as it is.”

“That makes sense in a sick way,” she murmured.

At that, came an announcement on the PA. “Intruders on the move. Four miles out. Everybody to their stations.”

At that, Ice turned to Celia. “Head on up to your room and lock yourself in.”

Celia protested, “I should do something more.”

“If you can do it on your own turf, something psychic, then be my guest, but this is nonnegotiable,” Ice said in an uncompromising tone. “Go on. Protect your twins.”

With absolutely no way to argue that, Celia headed up to her room. She passed Alfred on her way. “Will you go to your room too?”

“Nope, not yet,” he said cheerfully. “I’ll go get some weapons from the armory.” She hesitated, and he shook his head, seeing the look on her face. “Don’t even think about it. You’re not trained.”

“But I could be trained.”

“If that training had happened in the last few months, then great, but it’s too late now. Nobody is allowed a weapon who hasn’t been fully trained, no matter what the situation. We are minutes from an attack, so now is not the time.”

“Fine,” she muttered and headed to her room. Once there, she locked the door as instructed and sat down. Knowing a full-on attack was coming was the most unnerving sensation. She looked around the room and realized she didn’t even have a way out of this place. And that was a scary thought too.

What if somebody tried to burn down the place?

At that, Terk’s voice popped into her head. It’s pretty fire-resistant. The building itself is made out of concrete. Plus a ventilation system keeps fresh air flowing. Believe me. They’ve been attacked more than once over time here, and this place is like Fort Knox. You are safest in your room, so stand by until it’s over.

What if I don’t want to?

What surprised her was the laughter in his voice. I don’t want to come chasing after you to keep you locked in, but I will if I have to. Yet, if you pull me away from my post, then somebody else will have to cover for me, and we’ll be spread too thin. So you need to do what you’ve been assigned, just like everybody else.

You mean, stay out of the way.

No. I mean, stay safe and protect the babies.
